Cyber insurance assessment
Prepare evidence for your next renewal.
Map the security controls your organisation can demonstrate to the questions an underwriter will ask.
Discuss renewal readinessWhat will support the answers at renewal?
Start with the insurer’s actual questions and the date the response is due. Each control claim needs a boundary, a current record and someone who can confirm it.
Prepare the renewal briefing
- Deadline and scope
- Bring the renewal and submission dates, the current questionnaire, and the entities and systems covered by each answer.
- Evidence
- Identify a recent restore-test record and any gaps. Distinguish implemented controls from work that is still planned.
- Ownership
- Name the broker contact, the people who can confirm the evidence and the internal sign-off owner. Take policy and coverage questions to the broker or insurer.
What is the insurer asking you to demonstrate?
Start with the renewal questionnaire, the systems it covers and the evidence requested. A security assessment can identify gaps in that evidence and clarify who owns each response.
For example, an answer about backups is stronger when it identifies the systems covered, the latest restoration exercise and any unresolved failures. Your broker or insurer can advise how those facts affect the proposed policy.
How Vambrace helps prepare for renewal
Agree the assessment boundary, renewal date, evidence owners and the questions the insurer has asked. Review the controls as they operate today, including exceptions, known gaps and planned improvements.
The output is a dated record to discuss with your broker or insurer. Underwriting, cover, premium and claims decisions rest with the relevant insurance parties.
Prepare a renewal evidence pack
Agree the questions and scope
Bring the proposed renewal dates, underwriting questions and previous assessment findings. Record the legal entities, locations, systems and services covered by each answer.
Identify evidence and gaps
Link each control claim to a responsible owner and a current record. Check whether the evidence covers the whole environment or a documented subset.
Record the work still open
Agree a treatment plan with owners and dates. Distinguish implemented controls from planned changes and retain the evidence used to verify fixes. A virtual CISO can help coordinate the agreed work.
Prepare the broker briefing
Summarise the scope, evidence dates, exceptions and open actions. Ask the broker or insurer which answers need further explanation before submission.
Agree how an incident would be reported
Locate the policy notification contacts, deadlines, approved response providers and any requirement for prior consent before incurring costs. Record who in your organisation can invoke that process.
Questions for your broker or insurer
Which events and costs are covered?
Discuss the relevant incident types, exclusions, limits, excesses and waiting periods. Ask how the policy treats response, restoration, business interruption and liability costs in your particular circumstances.
Who must approve a response?
Identify when the insurer must be notified and whether you need permission to instruct legal or technical responders. Record the approved contact route in the incident plan.
How will changes affect renewal?
Bring evidence of material improvements and unresolved gaps. Ask how the insurer will evaluate those changes. A security improvement does not establish a particular premium, coverage decision or claims outcome. See the NCSC cyber insurance guidance.
Cyber insurance assessment FAQs
What does a readiness assessment provide?
A scoped review of controls and supporting records, an account of any gaps and a list of actions for the named owners. Bring that evidence to the broker or insurer for the renewal discussion.
What does cyber insurance cover?
Cover depends on the policy wording, limits, excesses, exclusions and applicable law. Confirm the terms for incident response, restoration, interruption or third-party claims directly with the broker or insurer. Ask when notice or prior consent is required.
Will better controls reduce our premium?
Control evidence can inform underwriting. Insurers also consider the organisation, sector, exposure and proposed policy. Ask the broker or insurer to explain the pricing and coverage available for your circumstances.
Does insurance replace security controls?
Insurance transfers specified financial risks under the policy. The organisation still needs to manage access, patch systems, test recovery and rehearse incident response. Agree how insurance notification fits into that response plan.
